Merry Christmas, Midlife Crisis

In our last blog “Christmas Traditions“, a certain someone egged me on about doing another Christmas poem – saying that it was a tradition.  News Alert: Once does not make for a tradition!

But I do what I can to satisfy the readers, so…

Wait, this year I thought instead of an MLC Christmas poem, how about an MLC Christmas song?  A familiar one that everyone loves and can sign along with (with apologies to The Carpenters).

.

Merry Christmas, Midlife Crisis

.

Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas posts are through
But I still have one left for this Christmas finale
A special one for you, sally

***

Merry Christmas MLC posters
And all you lurkers too
But I can blog and in my blogs
I’m blogging from me to you

***

Blogging can be joyful
Sometimes a pain in the ass too
And not every day’s a new blog day
But I expect daily posts from you

***

The lights on my screen
Make it hard for me to see
Almost every day
My eyes burn like fire
Hope still get vision when I retire
To see you and to say
That I wish you’ll keep reading
And continue posting too
I’ve just on wish
On this Christmas post
I wish, um…, ah…, babaloo

***

Instrumental Interlude (slow dance time)

***

Blogs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To post memories and to say
That I thank you for continuing to read it
And posting comments too
I’ve just one wish
Filled with love and niceness
Thanks for reading Midlife Crisis
Thank you from Midlife Crisis

Good evening MLCers ❗ Hope everyone had a restful Sunday ❗ 😀

  2. Seawalker says:

@4G – Don’t think so. But there were plenty old futs that day at AMSC. Pretty good, the stage was covered so that the heavy rains did not get anyone wet. Our sitters from young time came to see the kids. I think the other parents would agree and, hopefully, the kids in the future will be able to draw from their positive experiences.

Man, what happened to the footballers? Really a downer when they lose. But as the Tsaiko’s are thinking, some are saying Hawaii has a chance to run the tables again for a perfect season next year. We’ll see, we’ll see… but no more predictions.

DiO – I once knew of a Filipino doctor named Dr. Seuss. But we all called her Dr. Ai Seuss… LOL

  3. 4G says:

@DiO – yeah, you are right – Dr. Seuss. I thought after I posted, “Hmm, instead of ‘poem’, I should have said ‘limerick . . .'” 😉

  4. 4G says:

@Seawalker – lol. Good one! Hope you had a good Christmas. Did anyone come to check you out today at Ala Moana Center Stage? 😉

  5. Seawalker says:

    Green eggs and ham,
I do not like green eggs and ham.
    Do you like them?

    Let’s ask Sam.
Sam, do you like green eggs and ham?
    No, I do not.
I like my green eggs with lamb.

    Green eggs with lamb.
Does Pam like green eggs and lamb?
    No, I do not.
I like my green eggs with jam.

    🙂

  6. David In Oregon says:

4G: There’s gotta be Dr. Seuss in there somewhere 😆

  7. 4G says:

    @KAN – lol. Ham, lamb, jam – there’s gotta be a poem in there somewhere . . . . 😉

  8. KAN says:

@LK: yay for your ham! We had ham and lamb (with jam!) at Sweetie’s sister’s place yesterday. My great New Year’s cleanup starts today . . .

  9. LINDA KATO says:

Seawalker, yes, the ham was tender and delicious. 15 min. per pound at 325 degrees was just perfect. My sister-in-law is making Portugese Bean Soup with the ham on the bone. I don’t know how to do that but it sounds delicious.

Hope you had a nice holiday!

  10. Seawalker says:

@LK – Now we’re talking, fireworks! I need to make sure we use up all of ours. Still have some leftover from Indy Day. Did the ham turn out okay?

@Mark – Agree, sometimes the natives just need a rallying cry to bring out the best in them. U.H. allowed Tulsa to score 62 in their own house. Now, the attention goes to U.H. basketball…

  11. LINDA KATO says:

Good morning MLCers ❗ Happy Sunday ❗ 😀

M: we ate all day on Christmas too. Now to get ready for New Year’s Day. Since this will be the last time we will be permitted to play with fireworks, we plan to buy our share of fireworks ❗

  12. M says:

    Guud morning MCLers!

Christmas is done. The fake christmas tree is down and put away. Getting ready for the New Year.

  13. M says:

    Guud evening MLCers!

I ate all day and ate too much. I hope everyone had a GREAT CHRISTMAS!

  14. Mark'75 says:

Was really hoping Hawaii could have strung up two unanswered scores in the third quarter to have a chance, but…it slipped away.
Anyway, they sure had a great season, and I agree with 4G, there’s something to build on next season.
Buuut reading the newspaper, did Hawaii’s team really boo Tulsa’s highlight film presentation during the pre-game banquet (which fired up the Tulsa players)? hmmm…

  15. LINDA KATO says:

Merry, merry Christmas everyone ❗ 😀

We just got back from our 2:00PM luncheon. We grazed all afternoon/evening ❗ Am stuffed ❗ But it is so hot and humid ❗ Asked hubby if he wanted to get a jello parfait at Zippy’s to cool off ❗ He didn’t answer me…….

  16. LINDA KATO says:

ankles: what a nice menu ❗ And, grandbaby is getting so BIG ❗

Good luck with those scratch cards ❗ 😀

Have the merriest Christmas ever ❗ 😀

  17. Mark'75 says:

Rob@96744: I remember hearing those on KPOI, thanks for posting these memorable recordings!

  18. 91boz says:

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

Hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.

As for me I am still recovering from yesterday’s Sheraton Hawaii bowl blow out. Cannot believe Moniz threw all those interceptions. Also hope Pilares can at least recover for a shot at the NFL combines.

  19. ankleBYTERS says:

    4G:

I stopped watching after the second interception….I don’t even know what the final score was…just like the past three bowl games…if they had scored the first two possessions, things might have gone differently…something to build on next season. Being WAC co-champs is nothing to sneeze at…great season overall….

  20. ankleBYTERS says:

    LK:

The baby weighs over 12 lbs now….maybe UH can use him on the offensive/defensive line 😆

I’m putting together dinner for the kids and their SOs…ham, green bean casserole, scallop/mash potato, rolls, pie, egg nog…exactly what I had for lunch at my best friend’s house 🙂 I just put the ham in to reheat…should be done by 6pm.

For their stocking stuffer, I threw in about 30 scratch tickets….we usually make a profit every year…hope for the BEEG one today ❗

  21. Kage says:

    Merry Christmas Everyone.

  22. David In Oregon says:

Linda: Yes, you’ll have to check the rules. With many of these games, the more numbers you match, the more you win.

  23. LINDA KATO says:

DIO: Mega win: so far 1 number won out of 6. I didn’t know I could be a partial winner. 18 more draws to go. I may have to fly back to San Diego to pick up some cash! Wouldn’t that be a great way to begin a New Year ❓ ❗ 😀

  24. LINDA KATO says:

4G: ham sure smells good while cooking!

    Merry Christmas!

  25. 4G says:

@ct (December 24th, 2010 at 11:41 pm) – Hey! Long time no see. I hope all is well. Merry Christmas!

@LK – mmmmmm, all this talk about ham is making me hungry! lol.

Oy, UH took a smackin’ yesterday. 🙁 A not so pleasant ending to an AWESOME season . . . .

  26. LINDA KATO says:

TwoFish: Thank you. My ham is in the oven at 325 degrees now, fat side facing up. We have a large family so need this big ham. Of course, we go potluck so every family brings a dish. We always have more food than we could possibly eat!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  27. TwoFish says:

LK – saw hams at Safeway yesterday – the kind that is big and has the bone in. On a little label in the back, in small letters, it said to defrost (they already were), and stick it in the oven at 325 degrees F, 15-20 minutes per pound. I think it said to place the ham in a pan with the fat side facing up. It was too big for me, so opted for the last half ham (butt) cuz they didn’t have shank portions. Took it and bottle of cloves, some dinner rolls, package of salad, and a carton of egg nog to friends, where we will go to eat. I’m still cleaning up after the rains got the stuff on the lanai all soggy and I don’t want mold growing.

  28. LINDA KATO says:

    ankles: Merry Christmas ❗ 😀

Hope your daughter is much better today and your grandson is getting bigger and bigger and sleeping more ❗ 😀

  29. LINDA KATO says:

DIO: Yes, thanks to 4G’s link to the Hormel site, I am preparing to bake my Farmer John Ham at 325 degrees for 15 min. per pound. Probably won’t leave the ham in the oven that long but will check it periodically. Woke up to get ready to put in in the oven soon. Our party starts at 2:00PM.

  30. LINDA KATO says:

    Good morning MLCer’s ❗ Merry Christmas ❗ 😀

  31. sally says:

    Merry Christmas MLCers! *Jingle Jingle*

  32. ankleBYTERS says:

Thank you everyone for an enjoyable year. MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone!

    Pua ting, UH…

  34. David In Oregon says:

Linda: Any updates on the ham? Is it thawing out nicely?

  35. LINDA KATO says:

Merry Christmas to everyone ❗ 😀

  36. ct says:

    Good Evening MLCers!!!

I know it’s been awhile. What did I miss??? Nah … kind of a long story but I was able to lurk once in awhile …

@Rodney – I know you have a bright new start that’s keeping you busy. Best of luck … and here’s to new beginnings. Just wanted to say thanks for the blog …

And thanks to everyone for sharing … it just seems to take me away from the complexities of life … to just take a moment to pause … and reminisce about things that I thought I had long forgotten …. and it just makes me smile …

Merry Christmas to all … and to all a good nite …

  37. Rodney says:

Merry Christmas to all the MLCers!

    Thanks for all your support!

  38. Visitor says:

    Merry Christmas everyone!

    Thanks for the blog Rodney…

  39. Rodney says:

    @Rob@96744 – a KPOI classic! Mahalo

  40. David In Oregon says:

    Linda: Like the song says, It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…… 😆

  41. LINDA KATO says:

DIO: It is 11:13PM in Hawaii but we’ll say Merry Christmas to all, everywhere ❗ 😀

  42. David In Oregon says:

It’s official!!! The clock has struck midnight!! It’s Christmas!! Merry Christmas everybody!! 😀

  43. M says:

  44. LINDA KATO says:

Christmas preparations going on…… Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas ❗ 😀

ankles: thanks for all the Christmas music ❗ 😀

  45. Kage says:

Tomorrow it is pies, pies and more pies.

Actually I am only making two pies. Chocolate pudding and a mac nut banana cream. Dinner at my sis’s house.

  46. Kage says:

@DiO- Jazz hands and spirit fingers to you too. 😆

The weather was nice and cool this morning. I did not want to get out of bed.

Grilled some steak today. I am trying something new. I grilled my ingredients for salsa, minus the cilantro. I hope it gives the salsa a smokey flavor. I have not put it together yet, so I dunno yet.*fingers crossed*

  47. Seawalker says:

Oh, my. The Christmas party is a few hours away and I’m already stuffed. Dat’s why hard. I’m waiting for the a/c man to take a look at our unit. Water was leaking. There’s so much moisture in the air. I’m showing my age. This used to be sleeping weather during college days. Okay, okay, the little birdie just told me to “suck it up!” samtsirhC yrreM 🙂 or as the Pakes would say, 圣诞节快乐.

  48. Rob@96744 says:

And if that wasn’t enough…I remember someone once asked for Coolidge Nakamura. He wishes all of you a Merry Christmas too…

Merry Christmas Eve, MLCers! Jingle Jingle!!!

  72. LINDA KATO says:

Gotta wrap our 4 grab bags for our Christmas party tomorrow. Grab bags are a fun tradition in our family. We ask everyone to stay within $5 but we usually spend more than that per gift (inflation) ❗ Bigger gifts get grabbed fast but the little gifts cost more. This year I am wrapping a super BIG gift. It is quite useful but it is not the most expensive. We’ll see who ends up with the biggest gift……

  73. LINDA KATO says:

Good morning MLCers ❗ Happy Aloha Friday ❗ 😀

A very Merry Christmas Eve to all of you ❗ 😀

  106. LINDA KATO says:

    Good evening, everyone ❗ 😀

    M: Thanks ❗

Kage: 4G’s links to Hormel offered instructons. It is a delicious ham. Would take some talent to ruin a good thing!

  107. Kage says:

    Good evening.

LK- can’t advise on the ham since I never baked one. The tastiest ham I had was slathered with guava jam. I do want to try that out one day. Foodland got the free ham, so maybe I should do one this season.

  108. M says:

    Guud evening MLCers!

    Welcome home LK!

  109. David In Oregon says:

    Good evening everybody. 😀

  110. David In Oregon says:

    Gooooooooooooood evening everybody!!

  111. LINDA KATO says:

    Thanks, 4G.

  112. 4G says:

    @LK – I’m sure you’ll do okay with the hams. 🙂

Like sally said, the good thing is that they are pre-cooked! 😉

  113. LINDA KATO says:

My neighbor just brought over another Farmer John Ham, 25 pounds to thank hubby for doing his yard work all year long. Wow! After I make these 3 hams, I should get it right by that time ❗ 😆

  114. LINDA KATO says:

Thanks, 4G ❗ You’re a life saver ❗ I have 2 hams, one for the New Year. The Christmas one will be the “experiment”. 😆

  115. 4G says:

Good to have you home, LK!

  116. LINDA KATO says:

Thanks, 4G ❗ Gotta love our MLC family ❗ 😀

  117. 4G says:

@Seawalker – I’m not planning on going to the game but am hopeful UH puts on a good show in front of a national audience. I was a bit concerned with Tulsa’s no-huddle offense – hopefully, their defense is as porous as you say and we just gotta out gun ’em! lol.

  118. LINDA KATO says:

    sally: Thanks so much ❗

I sent an emergency email to Hormel (makers of the ham). If they do not respond, I will try your method.

I made it once before but my Mom was here to give me instructions. She’s in heaven now so I can’t ask her. Better write things down from now on.

  119. 4G says:

@LK and @sally – the information on-line says to heat per package instructions! LOL.

Here is some generic information on heating/cooking ham:

    http://southernfood.about.com/cs/hamrecipes/ht/heat_ham.htm

BTW, I do NOT claim to know what I am talking about! 😉

    One more link coming.

  120. sally says:

LINDA KATO: I’m the last person should be advising you on cooking (hee hee) but I made one for Thanksgiving.

Like you said, it’s already cooked so you can’t go wrong. I put mine in the oven 325 degrees for 40 minutes, took it out, cut it down the middle (cuz you gonna do that anyway to cut into serving pieces yah?) and it was still a little bit cold in the middle. So I popped it back in and just kept checking.

Like you, I didn’e even notice that there was no instructions. I went online and comments were everywhere about “how do you cook this thing?”. So we’re not the only ones. geez.

    Hope this helps!

  121. sally says:

awww Ynaku, cuz you’re such an awesome guy!

hey, Honda si Boy just arrived in Hilo…

  122. LINDA KATO says:

The ham is 22 pounds. I am now defrosting it. It is already fully cooked.

  123. LINDA KATO says:

I am heating up a Farmer John ham for Christmas. It didn’t come with instructions. Does anyone know how long I am supposed to bake this ham?

  124. Seawalker says:

@4G – Put money on Hawaii. Hawaii will probably beat Tulsa by more than 2 touchdowns. I know the point spread was 11-1/2 at some point. If it’s still under 14, go for it. Tulsa’s no-huddle offense cannot outscore Hawaii. Tulsa’s defense is terrible and Moniz will throw for over 500 yards on them. Tulsa scored a win over Notre Dame on the road. But Hawaii is tough to beat at home. Ask Nevada about this. If Nevada beat Hawaii, they would’ve been undefeated and playing in a BCS game. What, you going to the game?

  125. Ynaku says:

Whew! The things I do to make people happy 🙂

sally, this will NOT be an annual thing 😛

KAN, yeah you’re right I no like desk work, but hey end of the year right? Cleaning up da office and throwing away old the old stuff. Where did all the time go?

4G, I texted Rod to take me out of moderation h*ll since I had all those links. He only laugh 😆

Seawalker, Sometime when I’m in the mood, I like to write. Took newswriting in High School, but never pursued that. I’m in Telecommunication and need to write LOTS of reports. 😡

Kage, we meet up one day.

LK, I’m on vac next week and I KNOW my wife get plenty work for me do at home. No time to blog. 🙂

OL 😀 my pal my buddy. Missed you man. Business slow without the partners around. Speaking of which, where’s snow, BananaFysh, Opso and anklebiter oh and HNL2LAS 😀

Have a great one gang. Catch you laters.

If I missed anyone, you come under “Friends”

  126. LINDA KATO says:

Ok, now to do tons of laundry ❗ All those muumuus to wash ❗ 😀

  127. LINDA KATO says:

I had my first “pat down” at the airport. A man TSA agent said I could have had something strapped to my legs under my muumuu. I was ready to lift my muumuu up and show all but the lady TSA agent said that wasn’t necessary and she didn’t pat down my privates so was not too bad. What we do for our country 😆

  128. LINDA KATO says:

Back at home it is hot and humid but there is no place like home. Happy to be back in familiar territory. I can always turn on the A/C here if I can’t take the heat! 😀

  129. LINDA KATO says:

sally: It was cold from 12 degrees to 29 degrees and snowy in Omaha but I wasn’t cold because we went from a warm heated car to a warm heated room. I just had to be careful not to fall down in the slick snow on the sidewalks.

In San Diego, it was 62 degrees, windy and rainy. I was cold there because the wind and rain blew through my clothing. While waiting for our shuttle driver my muumuu was soaking wet down to my underwear. I was freezing more in San Diego!

  130. LINDA KATO says:

Thanks everyone for the welcome back wishes ❗ 😀

Thanks, Ynaku for the recap of the year (not New Year’s yet) but that’s ok, recap of the past year was fun.

sally: Zippy’s is always GOOD ❗

  131. 4G says:

    Totally off topic.

@Seawalker – how is UH looking for tomorrow against Tulsa? I hope we do well – especially since the last couple of bowl games saw us getting creamed pretty good. 😉

  132. KAN says:

Whoa, OL sighting! Ju’like old times (sniff sniff).

Ynaku – that was a good, long year-end summary. I thought you didn’t like doing desk work? 😕

    Welcome back LK!

    Hi Masako!

    (Head tilting back @ sally.)

  133. Masako says:

Happy Holidays everyone! I’ve been so busy. Great poem Rodney!

  134. sally says:

@Kage: you might be late, but at least there won’t be any lines at the post office! Nice touch, the Happy New Year in the boxes. lol

  135. Kage says:

    Good Morning MLCers.

    Good poems Rod and OL.
Thank you Ynaku for the recap.
    Welcome home LK.
Have a safe trip Keoni and OL. OL-remember your poor blog family when you hit da beeg one. 😉

Off to the post office and other errands before Christmas. Yeah, I know they not going get the boxes by Christmas. That is why I stuck Happy New Year in the boxes. 🙂

  136. Seawalker says:

@Snow – Where you, sistah? Okay, got a positive confirmation. Chicken Alice is now at Club New Casino. When ordering, tell her “Tony” sent you. LOL

  137. Seawalker says:

@Yanaku – Hey, you really have a way with words–thanks.

@Keoni – Sugarplum is a candy made out of fruits, eh? Correct me if I’m wrong. Sugarplum fairies = fruits = men in tights = sweet mahus…LOL The Nutcracker is the first date I had with my wife. Coco Lee’s concert got cancelled and we settled for the Hawaii Theatre instead. Good memories.

  138. 4G says:

Eh, @Ynaku – I was just thinking. How you got out of moderation so quick? You must be *special* or something, ah? LOL – just kidding!

  139. 4G says:

@Ynaku – awwww, that was a REALLY nice post. It brought back a lot of memories of time well spent on this blog.

    A Christmas Poem…….by OL

Christmas is the season of cheer
Everyone’s so nice, they call you “Dear”
People smile, laugh, and hold open the door
    After Christmas…………….NO MORE!

Ah………..dats all I have time FOR.

    OL

  143. Ynaku says:

OK sally. Wait until my posts comes out of Moderation. Hope you guys enjoy it.

  144. Ynaku says:

    OK just for you…..

This is the time for reflections. So what did we do all year?
Blogging life as we knew it disappeared when Honolulu Advertiser got sold and the new Star Advertiser failed to pick up our dear friends. But was that really the end? No it was a new beginning.
Midlife Crisis Hawaii stood its grounds and moved to a different home. So did Shauna of Odds and Ends. Bruddah Lance no longer continued with Wassap Wit Dat! But das ok, we all gotta move on.

It was a rocky new start, but we endured. Connections hard to break. Reasons to meet up were made and friends still gather. 

Finally YNAKU MEETS SALLY! 😆 Yep remember that day at the new Side Street Inn. Couldn’t hear a thing we said, but we all laughed and laugh some more. Got to meet others IRL (sorry Creative and Konaish, neva get to talk story much.) Crazy? Yep we were a crazy bunch. But I love em.

New friendships were made here at MLC. If Rod didn’t go through what he went through, we wouldn’t have met Linda Kato, Seawalker, 4G, Keoni and many others. We followed Linda with her life changing adventures. She was fortunate to retire and go Vegas Baby. We wish her all the best. And when she does hit that big one, hope she remembers me 😆 She also went Omaha wearing her muumuu without thermals *brrrrrrr* At least she had her muumuu. Hmm, wonder what happened to my red muumuu and feather boa……

Funkshun, Hawaiian Brian, The Beat, Give To Live, 70‘s Reunion Whoa, you MLCers still get the moves and “da energy”

Rodney brave to post something like this. Good thing Aunty Paula has a sense of humor. She did marry Rod 😛

    Memory Lane….
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtu9RXeYSLU
Memories, light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories of the way we were.
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
smiles we give to one another
    for the way we were.

    http://midlifecrisishawaii.com/2010/07/28/driving-memories/
Remember getting your driver’s permit? Yep we all had stories to tell. Toys, Music, Food, the list goes on. Posts of memories of time past. *sigh* Good times.

OH! Then Rodney lands a gig. He now works for Kamehameha Schools. Congratulations Rod.
Shauna too found a job at Communication Pacific as an account executive. Just recently she got promoted to Senior Account Executive. Whoo Hoo! Congratulations!
As for Bruddah Lance? He became a Daddy!!!! Chee Hoo

    Holy Mullet Rodney http://midlifecrisishawaii.com/2010/08/16/hairstyles/

Pencil maneuvers. How to cure the common cold. Remedies, you guys get em. Sked try but you guys get the medicine. But the best medicine is Laughter. You like laugh? Keep reading MLC Hawaii. Our host, Rodney “da shopping king” Lee will keep us giggling like little girls.,.,. well only sally going do that. As for the rest of us…. We jus’ goin’ buss laugh 😆

    In conclusion……. (since when yeah?)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBpYgpF1bqQ

May our friendship continue to thrive. We are indeed a virtual family. Good times? You bet.
Thanks Rodney and Aunty Paula for giving us a place to come and talk story. To share our adventures.
May next year be just as fun.
Thank you, mahalo, muchos gracias, salamat po, arigato. Until we meet again.

    Ynaku (FBI)

  166. David In Oregon says:

    Good Babaloo Everyone!! 😆

Rod:When I saw “Babaloo” I was thinking of Desi Arnaz singing the song. 😆

  167. Keoni says:

Rod, don’t want you to be in the dark any longer about sugarplums, so here from my secret source is the answer:

A sugar plum is a piece of dragée candy that is made of dried fruits and shaped in a small round or oval shape.

“Plum” in the name of this confection does not mean plum in the sense of the fruit of the same name. At one time, “plum” was used to denote any dried fruit. Sugar plums can be made from any combination of dried plums (aka prunes), dried figs, dried apricots, dried dates, and dried cherries. The dried fruit is chopped fine and combined with chopped almonds, honey, and aromatic spices, such as anise seed, fennel seed, caraway seeds, and cardamom. This mixture would then be rolled into balls, often then coated in sugar or shredded coconut.

    There you have it!
    No trouble, brah! Mele Kalikimaka.

  168. Rodney says:

Now it’s time to dream of sugarplums – whatever those are… LOL

  169. NaPueo says:

Good one Rod. You came through. 🙂
