Thursday 3 – Summertime!

Time for a Thursday 3.  The topic is Summertime.  Cut and paste the questions or just answer them by number.  Don’t hesitate to answer them more than once if you have multiple responses.  Or if you think of more replies later.

  1. What summer was your best summer and why?
  2. Which summer job was you best and which summer job was your worst?
  3. Name a song with the word “summer” somewhere in the title or the lyrics.

Here’s my replies:

  1. What summer was your best summer and why?
My best summer was the summer of 1972.  That’s the summer I became a surf rat.  I was old enough to catch the bus to Ala Moana yet too young to work.  Everyday was just play, play, play.  And the music.  1972 was a great summer for music.
  2. Which summer job was you best and which summer job was your worst?
My best summer job was working at Windward Volkswagen.  My worst summer job was working at Windward Volkswagen.  I worked that job though high school and college so that was the only job I had from 15 to 21 years old.  Somehow I feel like I missed out on “working cannery”.  NOT.
  3. Name a song with the word “summer” somewhere in the title or the lyrics.
    Summer Sun
    by Jamestown Massacre (1972!)

@kellyk – Thanks for the cheat. Funny yeah, how the game coders leave this backdoor in their software. Or maybe it was just a bug?

  2. kellyk says:

Late response but… galaga cheat = first screen, shoot all aliens except two on the very far right. let them keep coming down – avoiding them from hitting you of course – over and over again until they stop shooting, then kill ’em. after that, nobody shoots. hours of entertainment.

  3. Mark'75 says:

Thank goodness the trades are back…a little rain also feels good!

I’ll be lonely, oh so lonely
Living only to remember you I’ll remember too

  11. LINDA KATO says:

snow: when you mentioned 1976, I thought about my summer of 1978, how could I forget ❓ In 6/1978, I took my first plane ride out of Hawaii ❗ I went with a coworker, Yvonne to Vegas for 7 days then to San Francisco for 7 days ❗ I had “beginner’s luck” and won in Vegas 7 days in a row. That was a summer to remember ❗ My friend has since relocated to Vegas so everytime we are there I treat her to dinner every night on my winnings ❗ 😀

  12. Mark'75 says:

@fishhead: Howzit! Wow, that sounds like a WILD movie! No, I don’t think I’ve seen it, but sounds interesting. But had plenty that kind Japanese movies at Kapahulu, no?

  13. fishhead says:

off the subject. my sister gave me a DVD from the past. do you remember seeing a japanese movie at kapahulu about these samurais
with magic marbles. they fight a evil sorcerer. i think the movie was called golden peacock dragon. sorcerer changed to a giant snake and the good guy sat on a giant toad. let me know if you remember.

  14. Mark'75 says:

No real mention of summer….but the song that summer fun kids loved to hate…

  15. Kage says:

1-What summer was your best summer and why?
That is a tough one. Probably 1982 or 83, MLC moment. Sister got her license and we went to the beach every day around 4pm when we all got off of work.

2- Which summer job was you best and which summer job was your worst?
I never actually got a summer job. I delivered newspaper year round. Then after that worked 7-11, then student worker at UH. All year round jobs.

  16. snow says:

i’d say… summer 1976! went on a family trip for my parent’s 25th anniversary… (hey, that’s the time we went to san francisco and the lady stared at my deckers! lol.)… to disneyland and san francisco. went to maui later that summer, too. i was going to summer band but didn’t have to pay because i was going to be gone most of the summer! came back with tons of cheap clothes (gauchos – think wide-legged capris – which i loved but got teased relentlessly about… “where’s your horse?” BA. HA. HA.)!

  17. Rodney says:

@kellyk- Welcome and thanks for sharing your answers with us. So what is the galaga secret? LOL

  18. Rodney says:

@volleymom2 – I had that KPOI song list in my junk drawer. I also have a QFM one too. I used to get mine from Holiday Mart records department.

@Mark’75 sent me a whole bunch of digital images of song lists too. I should post them.

  19. kellyk says:

1.What summer was your best summer and why?
1980. went to the arcade everyday to play galaga. knew the secret cheat to make the aliens stop shooting and i could play for hours on 25¢.
2.Which summer job was you best and which summer job was your worst?
best job was sears because that’s the longest i’ve ever stayed at a job – even got vested, if that’s worth anything now. worst job was working at “carousel” (kids clothes) at ala moana – nobody shopped there because it was so expensive – can you say boring!
3.Name a song with the word “summer” somewhere in the title or the lyrics.
    “summertime” by the sundays

  20. LINDA KATO says:

Good morning MLCers ❗ Happy Aloha Friday ❗ 😀

    Have a great day ❗ 😀

  21. LINDA KATO says:

Thanks everyone for all the summer songs ❗ 😀

Loved all of your stories ❗ 😀 Especially, Mark’75 working with all of those special kids ❗ You are a gem for spending summer camp giving them a happy summer memory ❗ That memory is priceless ❗ 😀

  22. jaydee says:

I know this song doesn’t have “summer” in it but does anyone remember that song, “Chotto Matte Kudasai” that came out in ’72 I think? Who sang that song anyway?

“Schools Out for Summer”, Alice Cooper

  23. jaydee says:

My best summer job? Working at Wil’s furniture factory in Pearl City? Everything was so laid back and I could wear shorts to work.

My worst summer job? Wil’s furniture factory in Pearl City. The pake brother’s that owned the place evidently didn’t like me and one day one of them asked me to cut down a tree on the property. He gave me a kitchen knife to do it. After I refused he fired me! After that I just lived with family in Waianae one block from Army Beach and spent the rest of my summer as a beach bum. Hah!

  24. jaydee says:

I agree with you Rodney, the summer of ’72 was the most memorable for me as well. I had just graduated high school in the Mainland and moved back to Hawaii. I “hooked up” with a certain girl from Radford that I had been communicating with via snail-mail and we lasted all of two weeks. Hah! The memories I had that summer though, could fill a lifetime.

  25. volleymom2 says:

1.What summer was your best summer and why?
The summer of 1974 right after graduation… hitting all the nightclubs, taking the bus all over the island knowing that I was leaving for college.
2.Which summer job was your best and which summer job was your worst?
Only had cannery from what I can remember- I worked at Del Monte as a trimmer, but I did have lots of fun meeting everyone from all the schools and when fb time came, we still kept in touch. Even found a special someone…
3.Name a song with the word “summer” somewhere in the title or the lyrics.
Summer Sun- James Town Massacre, Summer- War, and In the Summertime- Mungo Jerry
*Rod- where did you get that K Poi Action 20?? Brings back memories, used to pick that up at GEMS all the time in the record dept.

  26. CMO says:

I remember graduating from high school with fear and excitement and getting to go to Disneyland for the first time and spend all night with some friends and graduates from different states that summer.
My best and worst jobs were at the Hamakua Sugar Plantation: Worst-probably working “hoe-hana” in the dirt and hot sun following a tractor, covering cane seeds with a hoe/ Best-working as a carpenter’s helper doing various projects around the plantation.

  29. Mark'75 says:

1.What summer was your best summer and why?
All summers were good since school was out. But summer ’77 stands out. Some friends and I volunteered as counselors at Loyal Garner’s Muscular Dystrophy Camp at Camp Makapala, in Kapaau on the big island. For a week, we were each assigned a child. We played with the kids, did crafts, bathed, fed them, and put them to bed. One day Loyal Garner arrived and sitting at a piano, entertained us. Some songs were real touching, and there was not a dry eye in the place. The same happened upon leaving camp. The work was hard, but it was the most satisfying experience of my young life. We were saddened to find out in the few years following the camp, that most of the kids had passed away.
2.Which summer job was you best and which summer job was your worst?
Dole Cannery. Trimming pineapples on day shift with the old ladies was the worst; working in the Electric Shop changing light bulbs around the plant was the best.

Never had a “summer” job. I started at Zippys before junior yr high school, worked until graduation so I could have the whole summer to myself before starting college and becoming a “grown up”.

My best summer was 8th grade summer. Spent every single day walking to Waikiki Walls. Beach every day, a textbook summer of a kid growing up in Hawaii!
