Music Time (again) – Sad Songs

Glen Campbell just had his final Hawaii concert last week.  I didn’t go, but my favorite Glen Campbell song came immediately to mind:

By The Time I Get To Phoenix

Such a depressing song…

Then I thought about other depressing songs that I used to listen to over and over again.  I don’t know why.  Was I a depressed child?  Did I imagine that someday that might be me?  Did I like feeling sorry for myself?  Was there something missing in my life?

Or, did I just enjoy music?  Meaningful lyrics.  Touching songs.  Songs that tug at your heartstrings and makes you think.  Music that messes with your brain.

Here’s more:

She’s Leaving Home – The Beatles

I’ve Found Someone of My Own – Free Movement

Diary – Bread

Alone Again (Naturally) – Gilbert O’Sullivan

What Am I Crying For? – Classics IV (Notice at the 2:30 mark he sings “What am I lying for”?)

Seasons In The Sun – Terry Jacks

Honey – Bobby Goldsboro

Father and Son – Cat Stevens

Okay, that’s enough for me (I could go on forever).  Now I leave it up to you.  Sad Songs.  Don’t worry about posting something that’s already been posted.  Post a link if you have one.  No more than 2 links per post or your post will go into “awaiting moderation”.

And if anyone wants to analyze me…

This Friday (9/7/12) – Take your pick – No depressing songs, I promise!

I’ve heard this song being played during ‘sad’ scenes in movies…

Procol Harum – Whiter Shade of Pale – Live: with the two verses seldom heard….

She said, I’m home on shore leave,
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
    And forced her to agree
Saying, you must be the mermaid
Who took neptune for a ride.
But she smiled at me so sadly
    That my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love
    Then laughter is its queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
    So we crash-dived straightway quickly
    And attacked the ocean bed

There are many versions of this classic. Thought this pretty interesting.

    Richard Harris – MacArthur Park

    From Wikipedia:
Written by Jimmy Webb, it was first offered to The Association but rejected. First recorded by Richard Harris

The inspiration for “MacArthur Park” was the relationship and breakup between Webb and Susan Ronstadt, a cousin of singer Linda Ronstadt. MacArthur Park was where the two occasionally met for lunch and spent their most enjoyable times together. At that time (mid-1965), Ronstadt worked for a life insurance company whose offices were located just across the street from the park. Webb and Ronstadt remained friends, even after her marriage to another man. The breakup was also the primary influence for “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” another Webb composition.

The song begins as a poem about love, then moves into a lover’s lament. When asked by interviewer Terry Gross what was going through his mind when he wrote the lyrics, Webb replied that the lyrics were meant to be symbolic and referred to the end of a love affair.

@Linda – If you needs speakers setup, let me know. So for you I posted the words to the song…

Was trying to find a way to play Earl Elugh so here’s the Earl Klugh version.

Earl Klugh – Long Ago and Far Away

Long ago a young man sits and plays his waiting game,
But things are not the same it seems as in such tender dreams,
Slowly passing sailing ships and Sunday afternoon,
Like people on the moon I see are things not meant to be,

Where do those golden rainbows end?
Why is this song so sad?
Dreaming the dreams I’ve dreamed my friend,
    Loving the love I love,
To love is just a word I’ve heard when things are being said,

Stories my poor head has told me cannot stand the cold,
And in between what might have been and what has come to pass,
A misbegotten guess alas and bits of broken glass,

Where do your golden rainbows end?
Why is this song I sing so sad?
Dreaming the dreams I dream my friend,
Loving the love I love to love to love to love …

  94. ct says:

This is kind of an interesting version …

  177. KAN says:

    My Mother-out-law says:

    “Cry,” Johnny Ray

  178. KAN says:

    Sweetie sez:

“I’m Not in Love,” 10 CC

  180. KAN says:

“Cry Me a River,” Julie London

  181. KAN says:

    Sweetie sez:

    “Unbreak My Heart,” Toni Braxton

  182. KAN says:

    Sweetie sez:

“I’ll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me,” Expose

  183. KAN says:

Sad song, but don’t know about the video:

“Send in the Clown,” from “A Little Night Music,” done here by Judy Collins, but from “The Muppet Show.”

  184. KAN says:

    Also Julia Fordham:

    “Falling Forward”

  185. KAN says:

    Sweetie sez:

This was one of our early bonding songs – we both knew it independently and both loved it.

    Aaliyah – Try Again

  187. KAN says:

    Sweetie sez:

“Letters That Cross in the Mail,” Barbra Streisand (also written by Rupert Holmes)

Simple Plan – You Suck At Love

  190. KAN says:

    Sweetie says:

Why can’t we talk it over
    Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word”

I have a songbook I’ve been keeping since I was in intermediate school – lyrics plus chords so my friends & I could play instruments & sing along. In college, one of my friends said “why are all these songs so sad?” I think music was a way to get through the depression of puberty ❗

I learned this song from Sweetie. It’s not just sad, it’s downright mad. I don’t know if this version is suitable for work, so be warned.

“Armed With a Broken Heart,” John Gorka.
