Hawaii Welcomes H&M

Okay, it’s a bit off of the usual MLC path, but Paula and I had the pleasure of attending the private opening of H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) first store in Hawaii.  It’s located right at the corner of Kalakaua and Seaside.  I’m sure a lot of you remember the Waikiki Business Plaza koi mural landmark – because that’s how we knew where to turn left to get to the Waikiki 1 & 2 theaters.

Waikiki Business Plaza Koi

Well, the koi mural has been replaced with the grand entrance of the new Waikiki H&M store.

Waikiki H_M

Yes, the iconic koi mural is gone, but it doesn’t really matter because the theaters aren’t there anymore for us to get to.

Waikiki has been changing a lot lately.  Lots of new up-scale hotels and stores.  That’s why it’s refreshing to see H&M set it’s roots in Hawaii – and especially in Waikiki.  H&M prices are reasonable and their clothing rocks!  Even for us MLCers.  I had a chance to check out their goods at the H&M store in Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas.  That store is HUGE.  And loud.

Yes, the mainland – and in this case, international – stores are here in Hawaii.  And I say that if we’re going to bring in the mainland or international stores, let’s bring in the ones that we can afford to shop at.  Like H&M!

What mainland/international stores or eateries would you like to see come to Hawaii?

Here’s some photos from the event:

Mahalo to Shauna for hooking us up!

    Enjoyed everyone’s posts here ❗ 😀

    As long as I have Zippy’s and Denny’s….. I’m good ❗ 😀

  2. ankleBYTERS says:

    I’ll trade you a Trader Joe’s or IN-N-OUT for a Zippy’s…..

@1 oldfut – Cracking up over your handle… who’s not an oldie over here? LOL Had many recommendations to go eat at this place. So when had the opportunity, had to eat something ginormous to satisfy me-self. Old habits are hard to break. Was good, like you said. It’s just that I can’t eat as much like all the old-futs here. Would I go again? Yah, if the opportunity comes up again. Some people eat to live. Me? I live to eat… hehehe

Mexico restaurant is good! Parking is an issue though. It is a little difficult to get in and out of their little lot (which they seem to share). Expect to hunt for street parking….

  5. DIO says:

Rod: Togo’s is good. Only thing is, there’s none in Vegas, mostly all in California.

  6. Seawalker says:

We need those eateries in Hawaii from those Japan department stores. Like the Takashimayas and Iseitans of Japan, it would add to the wonderful world of shopping for us guys.

  7. Seawalker says:

@Rod – Just like Soko Ga Shiritai, anything food captures my interest. Eh, time for a food topic to rev up the ol’ engine. LOL

El Poco Rollo – think this is the place I saw in a commercial.

Anybody tried the Mexico eatery on School St? That’s the old Ayala’s with all the parties sounds blasting every Friday and Saturdays back in the 70’s. Had Mexico’s bumbucha entree and ho, couldn’t eat for the next 24 hours.

  8. Seawalker says:

See this on TV all the time. Jos. A. Bank — menswear.

  9. Seawalker says:

How about Dick’s Sporting Goods? With a name like Dick’s, the jock straps must be a best seller. 😆

  10. Rodney says:

@Seawalker – The food pics were from the VIP party catered by Chai’s. They don’t sell food there unlike Ikea which has a full-blown cafeteria.

  11. Rodney says:

@kellyk – We visited the Bass Pro Shop in Vegas. Whoa! Much, much more than just a store!

  12. Rodney says:

@dancingbear – Welcome to the MLC blog and thanks for posting! Togo’s eh? I have to check that out!

  13. kellyk says:

Kohl’s, Marshalls, and for my bro-in-law the hunter – Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s.

  14. dancingbear says:

Togo’s, love their turkey and guacamole.

I wish I could edit my post’s… I would not have to make another: But I forgot to say……

I do not want to see anything More Mainland in our Hawai’i Nei….!

    Ever Again!

  18. Mark Shelby says:

    I can’t talk here……

    This saddens me.

I remember all of the clanging Waikiki Pile Drivers of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Day and night! Bang Bang Bang!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And the Massive build out!

I remember when Waikiki was not tall!

I remember when the Royal Hawaiian and the Moana were the tallest on Waikiki Beach.

    But thank you for sharing.

  20. Mark'75 says:

    Gosh I miss Niketown!

  21. Hbh says:

Really guys you are not missing much. Just be happy with your uniqueness serious the grass isnt greener. We have ikea, factory outlets and everything above mentioned, i would trade it all for holiday mart, old ala moana, k.c drive in etc etc lol. Didnt mean to be a downer.

  22. keoni says:

My one wish is that Wawa convenience stores would open here. But that is kinda hopeless, because they run everything from central supply warehouses in the Midlantic area. 🙁
They have hot foods/soups/chili, etc. that they dish up when you order them and fresh hoagies and sandwiches which you can watch them make for you.
They sure would give 7-11 a run for their money!

  23. Seawalker says:

Your food pics look pretty good, @Rod. Must be a trend nowadays. Heard Ikea has a place to grind too. Gotta check it out next time there. Whatever happened to Lawson’s in Waikiki? Thought they were going to open a ton of stores and give ABC a run for their money. Right, go try messin’ with the local braddah kings in Waikiki. H & M sure has a prime corner spot.

  24. 1oldfut says:

IKEA IKEA IKEA! Isn’t anyone tired of being held hostage by the high-priced furniture sellers here? We are not all so fortunate enough to afford the upscale offerings in them…

  25. Rodney says:

    VF Factory Outlet

  26. 4G says:

I was going to say, “Fry’s”, too. When I went to look it up, Bing said, “See Best Buy . . .” LOL!

  27. M says:

@Kage, you got me with the IKEA…. 😆

  28. Kage says:

IKEA That is my other favorite place to shop. Wish one would open up here.

  29. Kage says:

M – you geek. 🙂 only kidding. I was going to say Fry’s….. LOL.
I make it a point to go when I travel and there is a Fry’s Electronics in the area. I spend hours in that place.

  31. Hbh says:

Oh – sorry about that! ‘Kay then – Dunkin’ Donuts! 😉

  35. M says:

  36. Lowtone123 says:

Trader Joe’s, Olive Garden, Joe’s Crab Shack, Red Robin (Yumm, sorry) & In N Out Burger. Sorry all about the food.

  37. Gareth says:

    Trader Joe’s , definitely.

And, it’s good that they opened H&M in Hawaii; about time they brought in stores that us locals can shop in. H&M will do much better than that snobby and expensive Saks 5th Avenue!

  38. KAN says:

I have a selfish wish that Trader Joe’s never opens in Hawai`i because then my main source of omiyage would dry up.

  39. KAN says:

4G: I have a personal grudge against Krispy Kreme – they screwed over the husband of one of my friends. I will never shop there again, and never eat one again. Back in the days when I could still eat wheat (and before my grudge), I liked their doughnuts when they were warm, but then again, almost all doughnuts are good when they’re warm.

  40. kailua girl says:

TRADER JOE’S!!! Top shop and Anthropologie, oh and Chipotle. Yum! Life
would be close to perfect here in Hawai’i!. 🙂

  41. M says:

    Guud morning MLCers!

  42. Mark'75 says:

Agree. Olive Garden and Trader Joe’s.

  43. 4G says:

    Trader Joe’s.

  44. 4G says:

    CiCi’s Pizza.

  45. 4G says:

    We need more KFC locations!

  46. 4G says:

    In-n-Out Burgers! LOL.

  47. 4G says:

    We could use an Applebee’s.

  48. 4G says:

Olive Garden, since the proposed Kapolei location seems DOA.

  49. 4G says:

I don’t get why Oahu doesn’t have a Krispy Kreme. And while not mainland/international, how is the Minit Stop fried chicken? LOL.

  50. 4G says:

I may not agree with their political and/or religious views, but Hobby Lobby.

  51. 4G says:
