Do You Remember… Sidekicks

Since we’re doing lists this week – how about a list of Sidekicks.

Sidekick: A close companion who is generally regarded as subordinate to the one he accompanies.

Xena and Gabrielle

Xena and Gabrielle
I was a big fan of Xena: Warrior Princess.  Not so much Gabrielle.  My favorite villain was Callisto

Batman and Robin
batman and robin
I remember watching Batman.  It came on at 6:30 PM.  Can’t remember which day of the week.

Gumby and Pokey

Of course, I had a Gumby and Pokey toy.  Played with it until the copper wire broke through Gumby’s skin.  LOL

Here’s a few more Sidekicks to get your started:

  • Checkers and Pogo
  • Yogi Bear and Booboo
  • Princess Knight and Choppy
  • Spinner and Paddlefoot

And go ahead and list your memories of the Master/Sidekick.  Again, don’t worry about repeating what someone else might have previously posted.

@hema – Heard about the the hairless antics of competitive swimmers. Where does that put the Okinawans when they’re in the pool… a full body wax?
Curtis “the bull” Iaukea was one crazy buggah. I still remember on one of the wrestling locker room interviews, he wanted to show how tough his head was with scar tissues accumulated over the years. “Whap”, he breaks a bottle of beer on his forehead. Lord and Ed was amazed, and it was kind of freaky to see on TV.

@Steve – Curtis “the bull” said Johnny Barend met his future wife in Waikiki. Annie was still married to “Handsome” for 44 years when he died last week. The Bull also said her name was Transistor Annie because she always had a transitor radio to her ear. 🙂

“Handsome” Johnny Barend was one of the most athletic and exciting wrestlers to appear in Hawaii. He first wrestled in Hawaii in 1955 and returned 9 years later in 1964 to wrestle for Ed Francis. Johnny would enter the ring wearing a black top hat, black cape, sunglasses and carrying a cane. During his locker room interviews, he would read his “fractured fairy tales” while wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigar. At one point, his entrance music was “The Batman Theme” and he would call his locker room the “Bat Cave”. He wrestled in all kinds of matches: Indian Death Matches, Steel Cage Matches, Scicilian Stretcher Death Matches, Battle Royals etc. When he would start to beat up on his opponents, the fans would cheer him on by yelling “Geev Um” (Give It To Him).
In September of 1967, Johnny married local girl Anita Lum in the ring at the Blaisdell Arena in front of a sold out crowd before the main event. In 1972, he retired from wrestling after being injured in a match here on Oahu. Along with Curtis “The Bull” Iaukea, Ripper Collins, Jim Hady, The Masked Executioner, The Missing LInk, Lord “Tally Ho” Blears and many others, Johnny was a part of the “Golden Age Of Wrestling” in Hawaii.

    Here’s one on Don Muraco.

    September 26th, 2011 at 4:42 pm #
Was watching Don Muraco on Leahy and Leahy not too long ago. You would think these big thugs were all muscles and no brains. Not the Magnificent Muraco. Think he mentioned he graduated from one of those private schools in Makiki. He was witty, articulate, telling a good story, and so interesting. He even got old man Leahy to talk about the good old days of wrestling. Muraco said he was the original “Rock” before the poster-boy Dwayne Johnson took on that schtick. But I wonder what U.H. coach Mac has to say about the Rock of his football playing days for the Miami Hurricanes? Mac was the defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes back then.

@dihudfan – here’s some old posting from the blog @Rod put out when Handsome Johnny Berend died. The thing with Andre the Giant is his size was unreal. But his drinking was legendary.

    September 26th, 2011 at 4:24 pm #
As big as Andre the Giant was inside the ring, his legendary drinking outside the ring was most impressive. Read on…

  25. dihudfan says:

forgot to say this… we used to have a cafeteria on the News Building (Advertiser) wuz open to the public… anyway, while eating dinner one night, sitting at one of the tables, I noticed this enormous figure approaching the door, this guy had to actually bend down to enter… one of the sports editor wuz interviewing Andre the Giant… they came to our table and shook our hands… wooooooww… his hand wuz big, his fingahs must have been couple of inches in diameter… my hand fit in his palm… unreal…

  26. dihudfan says:

did you evah noticed these wrestlers… in person… you see all the scars on their faces… mostly on the forehead…

One more on wrestling. Can’t help it. Used to idolize that stuff. That’s why I tell the kids, “If anybody makes trouble to you, tell ’em my father used to watch wrestling. All the time, anytime, and every time. My father can beat your father’s a$$ any day.” Really. They have the green light to say that. The troublemaker’s miseries begin at home. I’m so ready to put on the ‘sleeper-hold’ to see if it really works. Blears, in his locker room interviews said you are cutting circulation off from the carotid artery in the neck. Yup, I believe in that stuff. 😆

  56. Seawalker says:

I remember how Chief Billy Whitewolf used to tell the audience with his locker room interview. “And this is how I trained. I hold a mouthful of water and breathe through my nose when I’m running the slopes of Diamond Head” I ran some in my younger days. Now, that’s hard to do. I forgot who burned his authentic tribal feathered headband during one of the wrestler’s antics. But those sure looked like real tears to me that Whitewolf was crying. Or when Gentlemen Ed Francis had tears streaming down his face. John Tolas broke Ed’s son Russ Francis’ (yes, the 49ers) ribs during a match. Brother Billy Francis wrote to dad saying he would avenge what The Golden Greek (Tolas) did to his brother. Epic, totally epic. We used to eat it up totally! 😆

  62. Seawalker says:

Well, maybe Uncle Tom Moffatt will one day Google his name and stumble upon here. He would be the authority to give first-hand information on wrestling. Eh, wasn’t he a promoter back then? Uncle Tom, where are you?

  63. Seawalker says:

    Beevis & Butthead

  64. Seawalker says:

One more. If you were a big-time wrestling fan, why did Ed Francis have a raspy voice? Because he was full of gulla-gulla? Nope, that’s not it. A fan in the audience got so into it, he took a ball-point pen and actually stabbed Ed Francis in the throat when he was outside the ring and on the pavement. Talk about a hazardous work environment!

  65. Seawalker says:

Okay, those wrestling days were the really good ol’ days indeed. Missed the first wave, but certainly rode the swells in the aftermath. Here’s a link (below) of some of the bigger names from yesteryear. Scary, I recognize most of ’em. And they keep knocking it that pro wrestling was not real. Harumph! I spock Beauregard, Handsome Johnny, Rippah Collins, Bull Iaukea, Mr. Fuji, and even Missing Link. Some of my wave rides also included the national circuit. I see the Destroyer, but where’s the Crusher? NCAA champion Bob Backlund would often wage war with Iron Sheik and the Dory, Terry and the whole Funk clan. I liked the 600 lbs. wrestlers. Cannot forget the likes of Haystack Calhoun and Man Mountain Mike. Over 1,200 lbs. of jello in the ring! But the ones who got my juices going was Superstar Billy Graham and Dusty Rhodes. Their battles were epic. Never had a chance to see roller derby or wrestling in the old Civic, HIC or Block Arena. But went to modern day wrestling once at the Blaisdell. Not bad and it was sold out. Lost my voice afterwards, if not my mind first. But thank goodness for television wrestling way back then.

  66. 4G says:

    @Mark Ellis – re: “old enough . . .”

Definitely an older crowd here, in general. LOL

    Re: “Atomic Drop”

I was never really that much into pro wrestling, but that’s not to say that I was unfamiliar with it. When the whole pro wrestling subject was mentioned here, my first thought was, “Atomic Drop”, but I wasn’t really confident that I recalled the name correctly. So, I didn’t say anything. 😉 LOL

So, thank you for “Atomic Drop”. And, yes – definitely the Atomic Drop!! 🙂

I also remembered his heart punch where he would slug you in the heart before pinning you. Good memories, and till today, I still think 50th State Wrestling and Wrestling Hawaii as a sporty performance. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh yeah, like how the Missing Link would put it.

During my time living on Oahu, the most infamous team was Ripper Collins, and his sidekick, Beauregarde. Beau would spray perfume before Collins entered the ring at the Civic, and was for all intents and purposes a slavish Man-Friday.

Of course they had a falling out, and a big feud match. Collins got cut (or cut himself-you be the judge) and literally, I have never seen so much blood shed by another human. My date was sickened by the whole thing.

They never played nice together again, and soon after Beau left the islands.

Panda Express Adds Bacon to Orange Chicken And Pairs Kale with Shiitake Mushrooms to Showcase Menu Variety
    Mon May 5, 2014 12:45pm EDT
    * Reuters is not responsible for the content in this press release.

ROSEMEAD, Calif., May 5, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Panda Express, America’s favorite Chinese restaurant, is embracing two of today’s most popular food trends to showcase the same-plate variety available to its guests every day with the introduction of Orange Chicken with Bacon and Shiitake Kale Chicken Breast. The new entrées, which appeal to those seeking both indulgent and healthful choices, are available at Panda Express locations nationwide for a limited time.

“At Panda, guests really can have the best of both woks,” said Andy Kao, executive chef at Panda Express. “Whether it’s a light and savory entrée like our Shiitake Kale Chicken Breast, or a sweet and robust dish like Orange Chicken with Bacon, Panda offers menu choices that will fuel your body and feed your soul.”

For guests craving a healthier option, Panda’s new Shiitake Kale Chicken Breast is crafted with premium ingredients that include chicken breast, fresh shiitake mushrooms, kale and broccoli tossed in a sizzling wok and dressed with a savory house sauce. This hearty and satisfying dish is only 170 calories, qualifying it to join Panda’s Wok Smart menu featuring items less than 250 calories. Panda’s introduction of Shiitake Kale Chicken Breast represents the first time a fast casual Chinese restaurant is offering kale, the nutrient-rich super food, nationwide.

Also new to the Panda menu is Orange Chicken with Bacon, adding thick-cut applewood smoked bacon to Panda’s most popular entrée. This limited time option is a must-try for guests looking to experience a bold and distinctly American-Chinese flavor combination. Panda’s original Orange Chicken recipe remains on the menu.

“Providing not one, but two delicious new entrees is our way of demonstrating the variety of fresh, delicious menu choices available every day at Panda to satisfy everyone in the family,” added Kao.

With the release of its latest menu offerings, Panda Express also is launching a new brand campaign that celebrates the simple pleasures created by combining the great taste of Panda’s American-Chinese menu with the welcoming experience of dining at Panda. “Panda Anda You” will highlight the family-owned restaurant’s belief that happiness is created when good food ANDA good people come together.

    About Panda Express

People read a lot into it; but they were just really good friends. Of course you don’t often see that on mainstream TV. The best were the musical episodes; they were really over the top, especially seeing Salmoneus mincing around as “Salmon Ella”.
