Music Time – Cheer Me Up

Okay – the elections are over.  I need some cheering up.  Hit me up with some songs.

Okay, feeling better now.  Ahh, what music can do for the soul…

Empress had those Run Run Shaw movies and Liberty had those Bruce Li-type of kung fun movies. When we went to Empress, it was always just enough money for the admissions and not for the popcorn or drinks. Midway through the movie, you could hear the rats scrambling about in the rafters. Later when Golden Harvest came about, they had a variety of Chinese flicks from kung fun to humor to drama. You had to be there to appreciate it. Just like the giant aromatic pineapple Dole Cannery had on display, you had to have been there to know how it smelled like on Kona wind days. Good memories!

And I still like that song from the fall of 1974 Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas.

In the seventies I avoided all those Kung Fu movies, dismissing them as–well dismissive. Bruce Lee was always Kato and not the hero of the day. Anyway about 15 years ago I decided to watch all of Bruce Lee’s films-being available at the Movie Museum in Kaimuki. To my surprise they were very engaging despite the low budgets and Bruce Lee was certainly the charismatic star and top kung fu fighter–a legend of very much deserved reputation. His first and last films were the best to me but all were entertaining. But as I have done a complete about face for Bruce Lee I’m still not a fan of martial arts films. Perhaps it’s because they seem to ramble and the fight scenes are interminable. Although the Jet Li films aren’t bad. Still I can appreciate how Seawalker could escape into the theatre back in the seventies for good fun fighting entertainment. And for more Hong Kong history I’ll try and read more about Master Fu Sheng later on. Thanks.

@HbH – Here’s some information on Master Fu Sheng. Caught a bunch of his movies at Empress probably in the 70’s and 80’s. Movies back then were special. Today, you can get it or view it with a click of the mouse. Fu Sheng was only 29 when he died, not like what Wikipedia lists below. A lot of people can’t accept his death, just like Grand master Bruce Lee when he passed away young. Alexander Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, and David Chiang were the stars in that generation.

    Life and career[edit]
Born as Cheung Fu-Sheng in Hong Kong, Alexander Fu-Sheng was the son of a wealthy New Territories indigenous inhabitant businessman. As a child, his family lived in Hawaii for a few years and there he began training in judo and karate.

In 1971, he enrolled at Shaw Brothers Southern Drama School and instantly drew the attention of director Chang Cheh. Cheh had Fu Sheng train with Lau Kar-leung for 6 months. Fu Sheng made his film debut as an extra in the 1972 film The Fourteen Amazons. His first lead role was in Cheh’s Police Force. Some of his other films include Heroes Two, Five Shaolin Masters, Shaolin Temple and the Brave Archer series. He eventually made a total of 23 films with Cheh.

In 1976, he married singer and actress Jenny Tseng, who had appeared with him in the film New Shaolin Boxers.[2]

He suffered a series of injuries in 1978 and 1979. On the set of The Deadly Breaking Sword a wire suspending him snapped and he fell eight feet landing on his head. While working on Heroes Shed No Tears, he shattered bones in his right leg.

Fu Sheng was supposed to star in Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow but was refused by Run Run Shaw; head of the Shaw Brothers Studio. Jackie Chan was eventually cast in the role.

On 7 July 1983, Fu Sheng died as the result of an automobile accident.[3] At the time, he was filming The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter in which he was to be the hero. The film was partially re-written and the remainder of the film was shot. In the finished film, Fu Sheng’s character abruptly disappears and the focus was put on co-star Gordon Liu’s character.[3]

His funeral was organised by the Shaw Brothers committee. His remains were cremated.[4]

Just got done watching the “Beach of the war gods” With Jimmy Wang Yu of Shaw brothers fame. Such a good movie. Did you guys know that Alexander Fu Sheng of Shaw brothers was a local boy from Oahu?

Did not know Sifu Fu Sheng lived in Hawaii when he was young. Consulted with my official 808 Zodiac Directory and sure enough, Chinatown claimed him as one of their own. Between Ti Lung, Chow Yun Fat, and Jackie Chan, Bruddah Alex had the silkier kung fu moves. Saw the countless movies of him at Empress Theatre. Good times.

  33. Seawalker says:

How can anyone vote for someone who broke the law? The POTUS needs to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution. Lying and saying the emails are gone constitute breaking the law. Bullying and alleged hating women does not. If the incoming POTUS does not deliver as promised, he will be a one-term(er). Running his mouth will only make you enemies. Remember, Nixon was impeached. But ‘draining the swamp’ makes sense to me. On the other hand, the theory of ‘the rich getting richer’ has all indications written over it. Let’s get this show on the road!!!!!

  34. walter says:

Voted Democrat all the way but oh well. Have a lot in common with Trumps platform on trade pacts, ISIS crisis and rust belt meltdown. Although his campaign rhetoric was unsettling I am willing to give him a shot (no pun intended). I wonder if any one person from any party can solve the nations crisis. Anyway bringing civility back in politics starts with everyone so here goes. We can agree smiling to disagree. Michael Jacksons ‘Man in the Mirror’ seems an apt song choice.

  35. hemajang says:

Time will tell, Mark Shelby, I don’t agree with you on Trump. I think he loves money and power more than America. Hawaii is heavily Democratic because of our strong belief in social and environmental issues. There are many businessman and women with a conscious, Trump isn’t one of them. Sorry, no more politics from me.

    I voted Trump!

If Hitlery would have won, America would have been totally destroyed in 4 short years. That is their goal!

I have no idea what has caused Hawaii to be so Lib for years, the Libs have never done anything for Hawaii except promise new free stuff and take you money to pay for it!

Maybe that’s why Hawaii keeps voting Lib. Because they want free stuff, but they just don’t get the Democrat trick!

Ya maybe Trump says some bad words, but he loves America! Unlike the Libs.

America will now be safe for the next 8 years, thank God!

When you’re close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing near my ear
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love
Anytime you want to you can turn me onto
Anything you want to, anytime at all
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver
    Can’t control the quivering inside
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love, oh
